May 2007 Newsletter

Welcome to the May 2007 Women of the Summit sometimes-monthly-or-so newsletter! We have a nice long newsletter with tons of interesting information for you today. Enjoy!A Thank-You Note

Kayla Freeman, one of our scholarship recipients, wrote us the following thank you note:

Dear Women of the Summit,

Thank you so much for your generous scholarship. It’s times like these when I realize how truly grateful I am to live in such a caring and giving community. The money given to me will be used in combination with a hard work ethic to help me accomplish my dreams for the future, so thank you again for your generous support.

Sincerely, Kayla Freeman

Kayla also wrote the following to let us know her better:

I am close to my friends and family, and if they were to describe me, they would probably say I’m a cheerful, easy-going person who’s usually eager to help people.

In school, I enjoy challenging myself with my academic classes, but I also really enjoy art classes like ceramics. I like to throw pottery and hand build; I think it’s very rewarding to shape complicated forms like animals and people from what was once a lifeless ball of dirt. Something that takes up the majority of my time is dance. I really enjoy competing and going to conventions. I have been dancing since I was four years old and, it seems, every year I enjoy it more. Consequently, I have chosen to study dance in college at Colorado State University. As I mature through life, I’m eager to see what new experiences will bring to my dancing.

The summer before my junior year, I traveled abroad to Argentina as a exchange student. This experience, I feel, made me an overall more excepting and open-minded person in addition to giving me a passion for traveling. In the future, I hope to travel to all sorts of different countries and experience many different cultures and ways of life.

Clothing Drive

We wanted to remind you all to bring a bag of clothes you are getting rid of to Thursday’s meeting for our clothing drive.

We will take all unwanted clothing to Summit Thrift and Treasure, which benefits the Family and Intercultural Resource Center. Please bring only one trash bag of clothes as we have limited car space.

Yard Sale The WOTS Board is trying to plan a HUGE yard sale fundraiser to tentatively take place August 24-26 (we will need all hands on deck, so please mark your calendars).

All fundraiser proceeds will benefit the Summit Community Care Clinic in Frisco. We are currently searching for a parking lot where the yard sale can take place with some sort of storage area close by where all of the yard sale items can be housed for a few days leading up to and during the event.

Please contact Carly Grimes at carly.grimes@gmail.com if you know of a place that would host our sale. Also start saving up all of those old items you no longer want or need, because we want this to be one of the biggest yard sales Summit County has ever seen.

Emergency Phone Tree
We are trying to create a phone tree of WOTS members who would like to be contacted for emergency volunteer needs around Summit County.

A sign-up sheet was passed around at the last meeting, but we want to make sure everyone who is interested has the chance to sign-up. If you choose to be on the list, you will be giving permission for a WOTS board member to call you if there is an emergency volunteer need (ex: Volunteering at a call center that is set-up to help families reunite with their loved ones in a crisis situation such as a wildfire).

If you would like to be included on the list, please draft an email that includes your full name, daytime, nighttime and cell numbers and send them to Carly Grimes at carly.grimes@gmail.com.

Another Thank You . . .

Liana Dagdavaryan, another scholarship winner, wrote this:

I would like to thank Women of the Summit for their gracious gift and also tell you a little about myself. I was born in Russia and moved to the United States at the age of nine, nearly ten years ago. At that point I spoke no English, so sometimes school was tough, but within a year, I began to speak fluently. Since then, I have dedicated most of my time to my studies, which was one of the main reasons that my mother and I immigrated to the US. I have also been working part-time jobs since I was 14.

I am currently a senior at Summit High School. I still work part-time at City Market Photo/Video, and also participate in the International Baccalaureate Program, National Honor Society, National French Society, and will be graduating in May 2007.

I have recently been accepted into New York University. My major is Pre Med, and I hope to continue to study medicine. And although I am excited to start my life in New York, I am also overwhelmed about the cost of studying and living there. Annual tuition and board will cost over $45,000. I hope that the ladies at Women of the Summit realize how much their contribution helps me and the other lucky girls that received scholarships.

Once again, I would like to thank Women of the Summit for this scholarship. I will be sure to keep in touch with you once I am in NYC, and let you know about my experiences.
